The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Claims Unilever Blocked Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Flavor
One of the co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated that corporate owner Unilever blocked the introduction of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company alongside his partner, revealed that he plans to independently develop this new flavor as part of a personal series showcasing issues the company has been barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Creators and Parent Company
This latest announcement escalates the ongoing conflict among the world-famous dessert company and Unilever, the British consumer goods giant which acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders maintain how the parent company along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented their company against "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol of Support
The entrepreneur announced through an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for public suggestions for the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol of support for Palestinians because of its coloration, that mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Current Changes
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company transferring their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
This upcoming product line is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company which originally established in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts plus Future Plans
Mr. Cohen indicated that he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by Unilever.
This development comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company recently, after many years with the organization, citing worries regarding how its independence was undermined following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen commented that “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to keep working inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise the social mission, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
