Monte Cook along with Keith Baker Will Lead Workshops at DMU

Since 2018, a specialized event organizer has been hosting immersive events where professional dungeon masters lead Dungeons & Dragons games in old manors in Britain and at an American castle venue. The comprehensive packages are especially popular among long-time dungeon masters who infrequently find the chance to participate as players themselves, and they often seek advice from the pros on topics ranging from improvisation and crafting riddles to dealing with tough scenarios at the table.

In response, the planners began crafting a structured way to address these questions, which led to the creation of DMU. The first session is scheduled for the start of 2026 at a university in Atlanta.

“You can watch numerous digital guides on any topic and gain significant knowledge, but the concept was that nothing compares to a live, hands-on session together with other dungeon masters, where real-time interaction with seasoned educators and other game masters likely in the same boat and aim to improve their skills,” noted Jason Carl.

Available Classes and Pricing Tiers

DMs can opt for tiers ranging from $995 to two thousand five hundred dollars, according to the degree of interaction they desire with the professionals. The entry-level option includes a choice of four workshops:

  • Skill Building: Teaches the essentials of leading a game.
  • Campaign Building: Centers on building persistent adventures.
  • Setting Creation: Emphasizes the crafting of environments.
  • Career Building: Aimed at DMs who aim to explore more about the gaming industry.

All workshops includes multiple sessions of training divided across two days.

“The classes are designed so that you walk away with immediate practical outcomes, enhanced belief in your abilities, and numerous applicable methods,” Carl explained. “These aren't simple talks and they’re not just static videos. These are sessions that you can participate in, gain knowledge from, and then head back to your table the week after and put into practice in your regular session.”

Seasoned Educators

Most classes are instructed by duo of instructors. Worldbuilding is guided by an industry veteran and the creator of Eberron, both teaching the skill of universe design.

Professional development presents multiple instructors, such as an author on gaming puzzles, an entertainment professional, and a pioneering DM. The additional faculty is meant to provide specialized information to participants with particular aims.

“Certain participants plan to create their own D&D actual play and display their adventures with the world, others plan to produce and create new material,” Carl explained. “Others simply wish to ask, What's the path to be a DM at a program like D&D in a Castle? What capabilities that I need? Is it for everyone?

Premium Packages

A $1,500 premium package includes access to a welcome reception, a welcome gift pack, and a 30-minute office hour appointment with a teacher. This represents the inaugural DMU session, though the organizers has previously run similar events during breaks between game sessions at their immersive experiences.

“One could practically host an full two days just on one-on-one meetings for career game masters,” Carl observed. “I'm not certain if that’s the optimal application of all participants' schedule – I believe the formal instruction and the practical exercises is too valuable – but I think it’s going to be among the most sought-after parts of the program.”

The twenty-five hundred dollar platinum tier provides an hour of one-on-one time and the chance to run a game for five players plus one of the faculty members, who will then provide notes and coaching.

“The purpose is for the faculty member to assess any element is focused on: Hey I don’t do well with improvisation or I feel stuck in this kind of combat situation. Could I demonstrate a situation for you and obtain advice on my areas of proficiency and challenge?” Carl explained. “Or maybe they want to receive input and advice on a specific world that they’ve been developing.”

Next Steps

Feedback from the first event will help shape subsequent DMU events. Carl suggested that potential adjustments could include expanding one-on-one sessions, extending the program to 72 hours, or experimenting with different seminar structures.

“I anticipate that we conduct these very often,” Carl expressed. “I really want to see several DMU sessions in a calendar year, in multiple places, and in multiple countries. The response has been extremely positive. We're quite pleased with current developments and I believe it would be fantastic to be able to do this in conjunction with large gatherings.”
