Hamilton Island, a Iconic Tropical Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Acquired by American Investment Giant.
A major resort island situated on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American private equity firm in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has established in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
The Reported Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The family released a statement noting they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is developed, including a substantial range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from the outback and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
The acquiring firm also owns hotels and luxury resorts in several nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
