For the Store Clerk Who Left Me Completely Speechless – Kudos to You
The scene was a weekend morning, and I was in a foul mood, topping off my mother's vehicle. This was one of those petrol stations that operates as a grocery store, meaning there's a chance of joining a queue customers carrying goods of pricey provisions. A terrible fate to unfold when your only desire is to pay for some fuel. Awful.
My position was fourth in the queue. A single person serving, a youthful clerk. A peculiar quality in her demeanor. When the faffer at the first position had completed payment for his Viakal, his pastry, and his box of eggs, It seemed to me I heard the cashier bid him to have a great day. Odd. Perhaps I’d misheard, or maybe she did say it and used a mocking tone. I pondered if perhaps she was an ally in my battle with dithering, reflecting my irritation for individuals slowing down simple fuel-buyers including me.
Advancing next, becoming the third customer. The new leader of our group completed her gasoline purchase with notable efficiency. Once more it happened: “Have a wonderful day.” No, actually, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. An American? In Stourbridge? Her tone suggested it, and few locals wishes anyone those exact words, or merely a pleasant day. Quite out of place. Rarely does one encounter people from America visiting this town, and definitely not employed at gas stations or elsewhere.
Second in line at last. Behind a poor older woman dealing with a protracted effort with her carryall, her groceries, her wallet and her rewards card. This took an eternity. When she was done, she too was wished a wonderful day. Yes, American for sure. Confirming it was possible by making a witty remark at the cashier, to observe that reaction when they look at you, without a smile, and state very earnestly: “That’s really funny.” However, nothing occurred of a funny comment to express.
In the end, I embraced the genuine warmth – or a mimicry of sincerity, that equates to identical in effect – while she stared straight at me, piercingly, and bid me an awesome day. I felt better for it. A positive experience.
