Climate Heating in New England More Rapidly Than Most Places on Earth, Study Finds.
The US region renowned for its colonial history, sweet syrup and bitterly cold, snow-covered winters is undergoing a rapid change. Fresh analysis indicates that New England is heating up more quickly than almost anywhere else on the globe.
Breakneck Pace of Change
The velocity of warming in New England makes it the fastest-heating region of the continental United States, according to the research. The pace of its temperature rise has reportedly increased significantly in the last half-decade.
"Temperatures is not only rising, it's accelerating," said a primary researcher on the project. "It's really sped up in recent years, which was unexpected to me. Our regional climate is moving in a different trajectory, after being relatively stable for thousands of years."
The analysis places the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming zones in the world, alongside the Arctic and sections of Europe and China. "The region is now heading towards being like the American South," the researcher added.
Analysis Approach and Results
For the analysis, researchers examined three datasets on day and night temperatures and snow cover dating back to 1900. The analysis covered the six states of the New England region.
They found that New England has warmed by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the global average, with the planet heating by approximately 1.3°C in the comparable timeframe.
"That is extremely rapid warming, which is worrying," said the study author.
Notable Climate Patterns
- Nighttime temperatures are rising more quickly than daytime temperatures.
- Winters are warming at double the speed of other seasons.
- The severe cold New England is known for is being eroded.
Marine Influences and the "Energy Storage"
A primary cause for this unusual build-up of heat may be changes in the Atlantic Ocean. The global seas are taking in more than 90% of the surplus thermal energy captured by greenhouse gases.
In the north Atlantic, an influx of meltwater from Greenland’s melting glaciers is disrupting the Atlantic current. This is pushing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, congregating heat along the coastline that is then carried further inland by prevailing winds.
"Surplus thermal energy from climate change is being stored in the sea like a huge battery," explained the researcher. "This is now being released into the atmosphere and New England is a receiver of that energy."
Impacts on Life and Weather
Once seen as a mild climate haven, New England has suffered severe climate events in recent years, including enormous flooding and extended drought.
The rising heat endangers iconic aspects of regional life:
- Syrup production is being affected by changing climate conditions.
- Winter sports are impacted; an ice hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been canceled or moved repeatedly due to a lack of ice.
- Ski resorts have faced difficulties because of insufficient snowfall.
"I reside just north of Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to skate on the ponds all the time," said the researcher. "That tradition has largely disappeared from large parts of southern New England."
