A familiar auction figure is a regular face at the annual event.

A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the year.

The successful bid for the 243-kilogram fish came from the operator of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates outlets throughout Japan and abroad.

"The year's tuna heralds a prosperous start," remarked the business owner, a notable participant at the yearly new year's auction.

Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is noted for placing high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.

Auction Shock and Record-Setting Past

Following the auction, the winner told journalists that he was "astonished at the final price," stating, "I had thought we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price escalated before you knew it."

This most recent acquisition tops his own historic purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Even after previously remarking that he thought he "overdid it," he has now gone on to surpass his personal record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously characterized by exceptionally high prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a separate sushi chain operator, which announced the fish would be served at its eateries nationwide.

The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these early morning auctions has transformed into a must-see event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

Immediate Consumption

The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly prepared for patrons at the bidder's sushi restaurants shortly after the auction was finished.

"I believe like I've commenced the year in a good way after tasting something so auspicious as the year starts," shared one happy customer.
