Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family go about their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
