Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff after a rollercoaster last day of play.
The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie from just over eight foot to clinch the win, echoing his only previous Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff win over Fleetwood.
Final Round Drama
Rai started the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last green.
Play-Off Climax
This set up a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in winnings.

Notable Contenders
Rory McIlroy found himself a bit too far to make up, finishing one shot behind in a tie for third with the Dane, after a stunning 62 closing round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever round on the DP World Tour, including eight birdies and one eagle.
The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his as well, but his chances of topping the standings were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
